On Wednesday, Parliament gave a final green light to new rules obliging firms to mitigate their negative impact on human rights and the environment. The European Parliament approved with 374 votes against 235 and 19 abstentions the new “due diligence” directive, agreed on with the Council, requiring firms and their upstream and downstream partners, including supply, production and distribution to prevent, end or mitigate their adverse impact on human rights and the environment.

The new rules, adopted with 613 votes in favour, 7 against and 11 abstentions and already agreed on by the Parliament and the Council, will establish an EU-wide disability card to make sure that persons with disabilities have equal access to preferential conditions, such as reduced or zero entry fees, priority access and access to reserved parking.

On Wednesday, MEPs approved new rules aiming to improve the working conditions of platform workers. The new rules, agreed on by the Parliament and the Council in February and adopted with 554 votes in favour, 56 votes against and 24 abstentions, aim to ensure that platform workers have their employment status classified correctly and to correct bogus self-employment. They also regulate, for the first time ever in the EU, the use of algorithms in the workplace.

The revised law aims to reduce air pollution in the EU for a clean and healthy environment for citizens, and to achieve the EU’s zero air pollution vision by 2050. On Wednesday, Parliament adopted new measures to make packaging more sustainable and reduce packaging waste in the EU. The regulation aims to tackle constantly growing waste, harmonise internal market rules and boost the circular economy. The rules, which have been provisionally agreed on with the Council, include packaging reduction targets (5% by 2030, 10% by 2035 and 15% by 2040) and require EU countries to reduce, in particular, the amount of plastic packaging waste.

The European Parliament has given its final green light to revised rules on preventing and combating human trafficking and protecting its victims. On Tuesday, MEPs adopted a law expanding the scope of current measures to combat and prevent human trafficking and better support its victims. Parliament has given its final approval to a new regulation enabling the EU to prohibit the sale, import, and export of goods made using forced labour. Member state authorities and the European Commission will be able to investigate suspicious goods, supply chains, and manufacturers. If a product is deemed to have been made using forced labour, it will no longer be possible to sell it on the EU market (including online) and shipments will be intercepted at the EU’s borders.

The European Parliament has passed new rules to make it easier to top up green vehicles.      
      
The EU wants to help create a network of electric recharging and hydrogen refuelling points that are as practical and accessible as petrol stations.      
      
Meanwhile, airports and big ports will have to provide electricity to planes and ships.     
      
The rules are part of Fit for 55 measures to cut greenhouse gas emissions and build a carbon-neutral EU.

The reform adopted on Thursday will make the EU electricity market more stable, affordable, and sustainable. The law will protect consumers against volatile prices. MEPs ensured that they will have the right to access fixed-price contracts or dynamic price contracts, and receive important information on the options they sign up to. Under the new law, member states will be obliged to protect media independence and all forms of interventions in editorial decisions will be banned. The proposed revision of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive aims to progressively reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy consumption in the EU building sector, and make it climate neutral by 2050. It also aims to have more worst-performing buildings renovated and improve information-sharing on energy performance.

Parliament has adopted its position on establishing a verification and pre-approval system for environmental marketing claims to protect citizens from misleading ads. The green claims directive would oblige companies to submit evidence about their environmental marketing claims before advertising products as “biodegradable”, “less polluting”, “water saving” or having “bio based content”. EU countries would have to assign verifiers to pre-approve the use of such claims.

The new digital identity framework will provide EU citizens with cross border digital access to key public services. According to the regulation adopted on Thursday, and already agreed upon with EU ministers, this new Digital Identity Wallet will allow citizens to identify and authenticate themselves online without having to resort to commercial providers - a practice that raises trust, security and privacy concerns.

In a rapidly changing world, the EU needs to be able to make strong decisions. That’s why the European Parliament wants the EU’s powers to evolve. This requires updating the Union's founding documents: the EU Treaties. They were last changed in 2007. 

MEPs are calling for treaty changes that would not only strengthen the EU, but also democracy, giving more power to Europeans and streamlining decision making. Proposals include updating the lawmaking process, promoting European cooperation and rethinking how the European Commission is elected.

MEPs pushed for inclusivity and accessibility regardless of disability, language skills or poor internet coverage On Wednesday, MEPs voted on a new law to digitalise Schengen visas, which will make them more secure and accessible. Following an agreement with the Council in June, the Parliament has approved digitalised visa procedures for the Schengen free-movement area with 573 votes in favour, 36 against, and 16 abstentions, and 548 votes in favour, 37 against, and 9 abstentions.
