Welcome from the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola
From 9 May 2021 to 9 May 2022, we Europeans held a great experiment in participative democracy: the Conference on the Future of Europe.
The Conference brought together three EU institutions, national parliaments, governments and relevant stakeholders, to discuss directly with European citizens their proposals for the future of the Union, to find common answers to citizens' ideas, hopes and fears. At the European Parliament, we took this exercise to heart. We hosted the Conference plenary meetings and 108 of our Members took part.
Now, the Conference has concluded. The focus has shifted to the all-important follow-up of the 49 proposals with 326 measures it issued, including both specific policy-oriented proposals as well as calls for reforms of the European institutions and its decision-making procedures.
The Parliament is committed to a constructive and ambitious approach in this regard.
At every plenary session, legislative proposals are being adopted, which address measures raised by the Conference. In parallel we have set out our position in two resolutions that make specific proposals for Treaty change and call for a convention on the revision of the Treaties. Moreover, Parliament's Committee on Constitutional Affairs (AFCO) has prepared an own-initiative report on 'Proposals of the European Parliament for the amendment of the Treaties'. This will be Parliament's input on how to reform for the future.
As President of the European Parliament, it is my honour and responsibility to follow up on the works of the Conference. The Parliament is dedicated to ensuring a concrete and meaningful outcome. For a start, this website will inform you on on-going Conference implementation initiatives and topical developments.
Together, we can preserve the momentum needed to make the EU fit for purpose in the 21st century. The Russian aggression of Ukraine and its consequences only increase the importance of this, as well as the debate on the possible further enlargement of the Union.
Thank you for joining in.
You can find a list of COFE proposals and their corresponding implementation initiatives; search the related press releases by theme and by plenary date (where applicable) or learn about relevant own-initiative reports. Key documents and links are also included.
Regarding possible institutional changes, you can consult Parliament's resolutions as well as the work of the AFCO committee.
